Indian girls finish third
Pattaya (Thailand): Malaysia did not need to stretch much to beat India 2-0 in the semi-final of the girl’s event in the Asian junior team squash championship here on Saturday. India thus settled for the third place and a bronze medal to go with it.
Both Aifa Azman and Chan Yiwen were higher ranked players compared to the Indians Sanya Vats and Yoshna Singh. Yoshna was the first to play against Chan followed by Sanya against Aifa. The Malaysians won both matches in straight games.
The loss notwithstanding, India’s overall show, despite not being with the best team, was far better than the 6th place that it earned last time in Hong Kong two years ago. “I am happy with the performance. Three of the four girls in our squad are 16 years old so they have a future. Ofcourse two girls were unable to make it so we look forward now to a good performance in the World junior championship in July this year,” Cyrus Poncha, the national coach said.
